What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is a procedure aimed at giving every woman aesthetically pleasing breasts. It is similar to breast reduction surgery. The difference is that in a breast lift, the breasts may be of normal size or slightly deflated in addition to being saggy.

Sagging can occur when the breast tissue volume decreases due to weight loss, breastfeeding, or aging, resulting in excess skin that creates a drooping appearance. Sagging breasts can be corrected with a breast lift surgery. In addition, breast implants can be used to enhance the lift.

During a breast lift, excess skin is removed, and the darker area around the nipple is tightened to raise the nipple position. With the addition of implants, the chest can be further lifted.

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and typically lasts 2–3 hours. The patient stays for one night in the hospital. All sutures used are dissolvable. Patients can usually return to work within 3–4 days. Mild pain is managed with simple painkillers.

Consultation and Preparation

The first step for any woman considering a breast lift is to consult a plastic surgeon. Patients should understand that the goal is improvement, not perfection, and they should openly discuss their expectations about looking and feeling better after surgery. Emotional readiness is one of the most important factors to determine before any aesthetic surgery, including breast lifts.

A breast lift can improve aesthetic appearance and boost self-confidence. After consultation, the surgeon will discuss all factors that may affect the surgical method and outcome with the patient. A breast lift provides a firmer, lifted appearance, often making women look younger. However, results vary based on factors such as age, genetics, bone structure, skin characteristics, alcohol and tobacco use, nutrition, and lifestyle habits. The final outcome is only fully evident after recovery.

Causes of Sagging Breasts

Breasts may sag due to various external and genetic factors. Ligaments that support the breast tissue weaken over time and lose elasticity. Frequent weight changes and breastfeeding can cause a mismatch between breast tissue and surrounding skin. Sagging may involve the breast tissue, the skin, or both.

Preoperative Considerations

As with all aesthetic surgeries, discuss with your surgeon why you want the procedure and what you expect. Inform your surgeon about any family history of breast disease or cancer, smoking habits, medications, or systemic illnesses, as these factors affect the surgery. Ask your surgeon about the procedure and potential postoperative complications, and make a fully informed decision.

Preparation Before Surgery

During preoperative examinations, the surgeon may give specific instructions. If you smoke, you must stop at least four weeks before and two weeks after surgery. Avoid prolonged sun exposure after surgery. If you take vitamin E, aspirin, or antidepressants, these should be paused before surgery. Avoid strict diets postoperatively. Cold or other infections may postpone surgery and should be treated before proceeding.

Postoperative Care

Patients generally recover comfortably after a breast lift. Mild pain may occur in the surgical area, but it is typically manageable. Arm movements may be limited for a few days. The breasts are wrapped in bandages similar to a bra, which remain until the surgeon deems it safe to remove them. A separate dressing is applied to the nipple, usually removed on the first day for wound inspection.

Bandages are typically removed within five days, and a special supportive bra is worn. This sports-style bra should be worn for at least six weeks. Early postoperative effects may include swelling, numbness in the nipple, and temporary discoloration of the skin, which resolve naturally over time.
