Preparation for Rhinoplasty

The first step before rhinoplasty should be consulting with a plastic surgeon. After the examination, it is important to discuss possible nose shapes with the doctor and, if possible, design the expected post-surgery shape in a digital environment. During this consultation, the patient should clearly express their expectations, while the doctor should explain what can and cannot be achieved. This way, expectations can be shaped in a realistic framework.

Inform your doctor about any health problems or medications you are using. In general, it is recommended to quit smoking before surgery; if this is not possible, at least try to reduce it.

Take care of your health in the preoperative period, because if you catch a cold, flu, or sinus infection, your surgery will be postponed.

Aspirin and similar blood-thinning medications may cause excessive bleeding and bruising during surgery. Therefore, all blood thinners, including Aspirin, as well as supplements such as Vitamin E, Ginkgo Biloba, Omega 3, and Coenzyme Q10, should be discontinued two weeks before surgery. Even cherries, which have blood-thinning properties, should be consumed in moderation.

One day before the surgery, or on the morning of the surgery if necessary, some tests will be performed at the hospital, and you will be examined by the anesthesiologist who will administer anesthesia.

You must refrain from eating or drinking anything for about 6–8 hours before rhinoplasty. Having an empty stomach will help prevent possible complications if you experience nausea or vomiting when waking up from anesthesia. Usually, you will need to remain fasting for another 6 hours after surgery, but your body’s fluid and energy needs will be supported with IV fluids.

It is recommended to take a shower on the morning of your rhinoplasty. This helps both with antisepsis and your comfort in the postoperative period. Before coming to the hospital, make sure you have no creams or moisturizers on your body and no nail polish on your nails. Jewelry, accessories, watches, and hair clips should also be removed. Menstruation is not a contraindication for this surgery.

When coming to the rhinoplasty procedure, it is advisable to wear clothes that are easy to put on and take off, such as button-up shirts or zippered sportswear. This will make dressing and undressing much easier while you have a cast on your nose.
