Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” removes the excess skin and tightens fat as well as tightening the muscles that may be stretched from pregnancy or weight gain. This will help to give a firmer, more flattering appearance. Waist size can also be reduced. This procedure can benefit both men and women of adult age. You may be a candidate for this procedure if you have sagging abdominal skin, weakened muscles or excess fatty tissue concentrated in your abdomen. This procedure is usually done as an outpatient and is performed under general anesthesia.
A horizontal incision is made across the lower abdomen usually at the hairline and one around the “belly button”. The skin and fat are then separated from the abdominal wall and lifted up. The relaxed loose muscle is repaired. Excess skin and fat are removed and the ” belly button” is brought out to the skin surface. Liposuction may also be performed at this time to improve the appearance. A dressing is worn for the first few days as well as a support garment and drains may be in place for several days. The sutures will be removed in 7 – 10 days. You may be asked to wear this garment for 3 – 4 weeks postoperatively and most of the swelling in the abdominal area should resolve at this time. Daily activity may be resumed gradually but should be limited for approximately 4 – 6 weeks.
